Broadcaster Suzi Perry was under starter’s orders today as she launched The Great Run Company’s newest running event at Donington Park. The Sun Donington Summer Running Festival will take place on Sunday 26 June at the world-famous racing circuit in the East Midlands.
With a selection of distances available throughout the day, including a 10-mile, 10k, 5k and Family Mile event, runners of all ages and abilities can come along to take on a challenge while enjoying a summer festival atmosphere.
And Suzi, who most famously fronted the BBC’s Formula 1 coverage, as well as presenting The Gadget Show, has encouraged runners to take full advantage of the opportunity to run at a venue normally synonymous with fast cars, petrol and the smell of burning rubber.
She said: “I’ve never ran around Donington before. I’ve gone around it on bikes and scooters and in cars, but it will be nice to pound it with my actual feet.
From the organisers of the Great North Run, the Sun Donington Summer Running Festival will be entirely themed around motorsports, and runners will be waved off by chequered flags and to the sound of revving engines.
Participants will have the opportunity to re-fuel at each of the pit stops around the course, which will take on the iconic Starkey’s Straight, as well as the Coppice and Melbourne Hairpin.
She added: “The motorsport moments that have happened here every year have been spectacular. To kind of re-live the greats that have been around this track – Ayrton Senna, Barry Sheene on two wheels, Valentino Rossi – and now us. Now we can go around too.
“I’ll be taking the racing line around all the corners and I may even have a bit of Murray Walker in my ears, commentating as I go round.”
The Family Mile is open to children aged 5 – 15 years old (those aged between 5 and 10 years old must be accompanied by an adult – aged 18 years old or over). After finishing, children will be rewarded with a well-deserved medal to recognise their achievement.
Suzi continued: “It’s a good opportunity for the family to get together. It’s not competitive, it’s just about getting your kicks on and getting out there and having a laugh.
“There will be so much going on around the event too, with bands playing – it’ll be a real carnival atmosphere. There’ll be stuff for all of the family. It’s going to be one of those great days out.”
The day starts with the 10-mile senior race, and concludes with the Family Mile. There will be live music, ‘come and try it’ sports, food outlets, face painting and a summer market all on site.
